Run with Fred

NoPa · San Francisco

Book me and I’ll be there.

I want running with my friends to be a thing that actually happens instead of a thing we keep meaning to do. So I’ve made it bookable. Give me more than a day’s notice and I’ll meet you. Or just turn up to something I’ve already got on.

Book a slot More than a day ahead and I’m yours.

How this works

Two ways in, and one of them needs no notice at all

Book me, a day ahead

Any morning, any pace, anywhere within reach of Fulton Street. More than 24 hours’ notice and I’ll be there. That’s the whole rule — the calendar is the system.

Or join what’s already scheduled

I’m going running or lifting anyway. Those slots are on the same calendar and short notice is completely fine, because you’re joining something, not summoning me across town.

The day’s notice isn’t me being precious. It’s the difference between a plan and a nice idea — if it’s on the calendar the night before, it happens.

What we’d actually do

I’m not in shape right now, and that’s the honest starting point

So start wherever you like on this list — the top of it is genuinely short. Everything begins at my front door, and the numbers are measured off the street network with USGS elevation rather than guessed, because in San Francisco a distance means nothing without the second number.

1.03 MI EACH WAY
142 ft climb out128 ft back2.06 mi round trip

Track session at Kezar. Jog down as the warm-up — Fulton → Shrader → Kezar Drive — do whatever you’re up for on the track, jog home. The session is as hard or as easy as you decide once you’re there.

1.79 MI
171 ft climb96 ft/mi0% retraced

The Panhandle loop. The shortest thing here and the one to start on. Fulton → Baker → Fell → McAllister, down one side of the Panhandle and back along the other.

3.01 MI
289 ft climb96 ft/mi0% retraced

The next step up, at exactly the same gradient as the Panhandle — just more of it. Masonic → Euclid → Post → Geary → home on Golden Gate.

5.00 MI
621 ft climb124 ft/mi0% retraced

The honest one. Not just longer — the steepest per mile of anything here, by a distance. Fulton → Market → 17th → Laguna → home on Stanyan.

Compare the 3 and the 5 before you pick. The five-miler isn’t 66% harder, it’s steeper the whole way — 124 ft of climb per mile against 96. That gap is why some runs wreck you and others don’t, and it’s why “just add a couple of miles” is bad advice in this city. Want something longer? Ask and I’ll measure it.

Straight answers

What you’re probably wondering

How fast are you?

Slow, currently. That’s genuinely good news for you — whatever pace lets you finish a sentence is the pace, and right now that’s my pace too.

I’m not a runner.

Two miles with some of it walking is a completely normal way to start, and the Kezar track is flat, soft and impossible to get lost on.

Can I lift instead?

Yes — there’s a bench and a pair of adjustable dumbbells in my room, and Koret up the hill when that isn’t enough. That’s over here.

What if I have to cancel?

Cancel it. No explanation needed and no weirdness afterwards — the whole point of a calendar is that it’s low-stakes to change.
